Why Cheap Heat Pump Leads Often Cost Installers More Money

Every installer wants a good deal, which is why low-cost heat pump leads can appear attractive at first glance. When one provider is offering leads for £20–£30 while another charges significantly more, the cheaper option often seems like the obvious choice.

The logic appears straightforward: if you can buy more leads for the same budget, you should generate more opportunities and, ultimately, more installations.

However, lead generation rarely works that way in practice.

Many installers discover that some of the most expensive leads they ever purchase are the ones that initially appeared to be the cheapest. The reason isn't the upfront cost of the lead itself. It's the hidden costs that emerge throughout the sales process, from wasted follow-up time to poor conversion rates and lost opportunities.

Why Cheap Leads Are So Appealing

For growing heat pump installation companies, lead generation is often one of the largest ongoing investments within the business. Every company wants to generate more enquiries, book more surveys, produce more quotations and secure more installations.

As a result, when a lead provider offers significantly lower prices than competitors, the proposition can seem highly attractive. If a company can purchase 50 leads instead of 20 using the same marketing budget, it's easy to assume that the additional volume will lead to more revenue.

The challenge is that lead quantity and lead quality are not the same thing. While increasing volume can create more opportunities, it can also create more inefficiencies if the leads are poorly qualified. This is where the hidden costs begin to appear.

The Hidden Cost Isn't The Lead

Most installers focus on the cost of acquiring a lead, but far fewer calculate the true cost of managing poor-quality enquiries.

Consider what happens after a lead enters the system. A sales representative attempts to make contact but receives no answer. They try again later in the day, then again the following morning. A text message is sent, a voicemail is left and additional follow-up attempts continue over several days.

Individually, these actions may seem insignificant. However, when repeated across dozens of low-quality leads each month, they consume a substantial amount of time and resource. Sales teams can find themselves spending hours chasing homeowners who were never genuinely interested in moving forward.

In this situation, the lead may have only cost £20, but the time, labour and opportunity cost associated with pursuing it can be significantly higher.

Poor Qualification Creates Poor Results

One of the most common reasons low-cost leads fail to perform is a lack of meaningful qualification.

Completing an online enquiry form does not necessarily indicate that a homeowner is ready to install a heat pump. Many enquiries come from people who are still researching their options, exploring available grants, comparing technologies or simply gathering information for future consideration.

While these individuals may eventually become customers, they are often not ready to engage with a sales representative today.

Without a process to assess intent, suitability and readiness to proceed, installers can end up paying for large numbers of enquiries that have little immediate value. This inevitably impacts conversion rates and makes forecasting far more difficult.

Want Fewer Leads But More Installs?

Lead volume is easy to buy.

Qualified opportunities are much harder to find.
